Tactical RMM has earned its following honestly. It's a source-available project maintained by AmidaWare and a community of contributors, built around strong PowerShell/Python/Bash scripting and a bundled MeshCentral integration for remote access, terminal, and file transfer. It's free to self-host, actively developed on GitHub, and a real alternative to per-device commercial RMMs for MSPs comfortable writing their own automation. None of that is marketing; it's the platform working as designed.
Breeze covers that same ground and adds a different core premise: the AI operator is the product, not a script you have to write. When an alert fires, the operator investigates the device, correlates signals across endpoints, applies a fix, and documents what it did and why, inside a 4-tier risk engine where you decide what runs autonomously and what waits for a technician. Breeze also ships the modules Tactical RMM doesn't natively cover: ticketing, SNMP monitoring, network discovery, and CIS compliance automation (13 of 18 Controls mapped), instead of leaving you to bolt on ConnectWise, Autotask, or a third-party tool.
The licensing is also worth being precise about. Tactical RMM is source-available under its own license, not an OSI-approved open-source license, and commercial or hosted resale needs AmidaWare's written approval; code-signed agent builds, SSO, and reporting sit behind a paid sponsorship tier. Breeze is fully open source under AGPL-3.0 with all 64 modules included in every deployment, and you can track exactly how active development is on our public release notes. If you like Tactical RMM's self-hosted philosophy but want the operator and the modules it doesn't ship, that's the difference.
